Its pretty much a massive double garage that someone built on the side of their house. Now the guys renting them both seperate.


If all goes to plan should have it in a couple of weeks or so. The guy who owns it has an absolute mint VW camper in there at the mo that he imported from Australia, very nice motor. There's another bloke i work with who has a proper space-ship of a Nissan Silvia he wants to work on too so it'll be a contrast sat next to the bimmer!

Went with graphite

Got one side of the sunroof done today but once again on my day off it started pissing it down. That aluminum mesh seems like handy stuff, very easy to manipulate into shapes. Will post some pics of that soon.

Ahhhhhh!!! Finally sunshine on my day off! Got round to my sunroof fix and thought id share the love.
The orrible hole.....wire brushed the shit, cut the dead and cleaned the edges

Then needed a plan to join the drain channel back up to where the roof was. It was about an inch underneath the headlining and my first idea was to use a bit of hose pipe. I couldnt find any thin enough to fit into the drain tube so the idea of using a funnel popped into ones swede. I chopped it to roughly the shape of the hole


Was gonna metal mesh over the top and then cut a hole out but the mesh is nice and easy to chop and minipulate so i put the funnel through the mesh and glued the end to the drain tube with liquid metal

Then it was just a case of body fillering it all in and trimming the edges with a stanley knife.

Then anti-rust (false hope) primer and ready to paint. Did the other side too but that wasnt half as bad


Just need another coat and ready to paint now. Got my new seal (courtesy of DrJim, thanks again!) ready to go on my sunroof. Gonna get some tigerseal for it as ive used it in the past and its good stuff.

Finished off my calipers and their ready to go once i get my new seals through

Is nice to have finally got a bit of work done. Just hope we can get this workshop next week, then the engine can begin!

More than awesome that, it's fantastic. Can't believe the size of hole, and how you've made it look good as new. What trade are you in again?? Reminds me of those cosmetic dentists that could take Shane McGowan's mouth and fill it with perfect teeth.

I think that's the seal off the slugs sunroof panel, glad to see it being used well!

Cheers folks. It aint perfect by a long way. I had to fill it all with the ends of my fingers cuz i could'nt get the plastic spatula thing in to smooth it out so there was alot to sand down afterwards.Took a bit of pissing about to make sure water ran down instead of collecting in corners. Like a said before, i aint really bothered if i never have to open the sunroof again, as long as it works properly.
Good news on the unit too!! Taking it over on Saturday The engine shall be done in the warm and dry woo!

Fished out the 323i calipers (did i get them from you Rob?)

Just had a thread catch up. Not sure you did, obviously the discs were though! Dremmel though?? That must of taken you ages, an angle grinder with a wire knot wheel attachment is pure win in rust removal, 2 mins a caliper would have them nice and shiny - very satisying!

Looking good, though sunroofs are more trouble than they are worth, personally I hate them. I'm cutting my sunroof cage out and fixing the roof panel in place instead...

Haha, it does look like a she wee Mark yeah, might buy a load and go into the sunroof repair business! Dremmel'in them calipers was'nt too bad, i could'nt have got a drill into all the nooks and crannies anyways. Will do them discs with a drill though.

Drills don't have enough power, it will tickle the disc! You need an angle grinder, man's best friend in the workshop... Homebase do a half decent one for about £16, the only problem is that wire knot wheels for the grinder from there are just as much.
