updates have been thin - my day job has been sorta getting in the way of my hobby :wha

i uncovered a few rusty bits when i steam cleaned my car theres nothing major, but a couple of little holes all the same.

this is where the fuel filler pipe goes / crosses the drivers rear arch, porper rust trap in there.

Some 17 year old kid apprentice at cg clutches did it. He was so young he even spoke in txt speak. He said "id av kncked it dwn furva bt rekond itd be t'weak".. he took off about 2kg off it or so its way lighter then the stock one. This is also first time ive seen a flywheel done with grooves milled in. Clever lad tbh and he gave me hope about the next generation lol. Only cost 65 to get done too.

I dont have any pics yet as not much else has happened at the man cave. Ive assembled my engine and box attached the loom and done some general tidying up.

Ive got a specialist welder to come over and modify the boot floor tovtake the e12 lsd i have. I was going to do this myself but my mate is awesome at welding and id rather he sorted it as its a critical job. I think ive hurt a few muscles lifting that e12 diff its really heavy compared to the standard e21 diff. :(

The plan for today im goin to clean up and wire brush subframes, tanks, bits n bobs all back to bare metal and then painting with rust bullet. It works really well the stuff i did last time i took the car apart has lasted fairly well.

Tomorrow i am going to make a start on doing the underside of the car. Where theres edges the factory protective coat has come off in some places, so im.going to go over the underside of my car inch by inch with the wire wheel and clean up any flakey paint and recoat that with a couple of coats of rust bullet. Hopefully ill have more pics by the end of the weekend.

£65 for the flywheel was a bargain. So what's the new weight?

I think you were right to get your mate to do the diff mount welding (although from the pics it looks like you've done pretty well at teaching yourself). How much heavier do you think a sideloader is, compared to an e21 diff?

It's going to be a lovely car once finished Nas. 8)

I should have weighed it before i stuck it on the engine lol. Iirc he said it was 7kg? When i picked it up i nearly launched it over my head :) its not as light as an alloy effort though.

Im hoping the end result is up there with the other cars being built right now. Tbh im more leaning towards doing it once. If i take the time getting all these bits n pieces done i wont have to ever cock about again. Ive got a month left before ramadan and ideally i want this car finished by then so i can cruise it about before summer ends.

The welder dude came round earlier he only wants a £100 for the job, hes a mobile welder so no need to send the car off. He knows what to do and said it was fairly easy actually. Hes using 16 gauge metal which should be plenty strong. Many thanks to misky he sent me a drawing of a solution and basically thats near enough how its going to happen. I will have to make my own rubber mount but i got my tape measure out and i think that an engine mount may work..

Im just having a break from rubbing down parts theres a lot of elbow grease. Theres no point sticking rusty parts back on. Its all about the details.

There's definitely no point rushing it mate. I'm sure you'd be just as unhappy as I, were you to cut a corner or bolt on something you're not happy with. I had no plan to powder coat the subframes etc but when you bolt a rusty one up, on a freshly painted shell, it looks bloody awful. Plus Aydin's car was there to give a bit of inspiration. I know I've said it before, but when we all finally get our cars finished and in one place, they'll make quite an impressive sight.

e12 diff mount done today, my pics are crap combination of bright background and a dark foreground and a complete lack of knowing how to set up my phones camera.

ill confess that I ended up paying a man to come round and do it for me as I didn't fancy making a mess of this vital job, :nah He used 3mm plate and then welded onto the box section underneath and welded on the inside to the double skinned area and there's a nice amount of room there now and all I need to do is make a poly mount. 20 years of welding experience beats the crap of my own welding effort tbh.

I also updated my insurance company on the latest round of mods and upped the agreed value to 10k and they did me a for deal £370 which I don't think is too bad for living in a city with very high car crime statistics.

Spent most of weekend going over every inch of the underside and checking the factory sealent, any loose or rusy edges was taken back and cleaned up. Someone has used that horrible underseal that is like rubber on the wheel well.

I spent hours getting it off. I have 90% of it off just need to clean off residue. I found wire brush and a gallon of high power degreaser got it off but left the factory coat untouched.

I found a few more 5p size holes and welded them.. but now i know 100% my car is good to go for another ten year at least without any major work to the body.

So on sunday i panel wiped and painted my arches with rust bullet very carefully! You need two coats. The first coat does the job intended and the second seals it preventing any air reaching the substrate.

Ive got 22 days left to get this done before Ramadan starts.

have 90% of all the parts. Got to order a load of aeroquip hoses and fittings (these are so damn expensive!), theres just some brake caliper brackets to fabricate and i need to redrill my rx7 disks. As well as some odds n ends.

All suspension stuff is ready, but i just need to recoat the gaz coilovers. Not happy that the powder coat they used has failed and tbh ill never powder coat suspension parts again. It just doesnt last.

Hopefully by end of next weekend my engine box / rear end will be on the car..

Had a v.rough mockup of my new 300mm budget brake kit. So far this job owes me £200 quid in parts. I was over the moon that it all fit under my rims.

If you give them a call they might refurb' the coating FOC. I know they've changed the stuff they use because of the issues you've had. It definitely worth a call or email anyway.
