Use e30 speedo with a sensor wheel on the driveshaft - Arshad did that on his car.

Oh i thought E30s ran them off the diff??

No...back to school for me...

Or do they run off the diff but electronic type?

There's a chopper wheel inside the diff on the e30 as I recall, Arshad's mechanic friend made a trigger wheel and bolted it onto the output flange/driveshaft area with the sensor on a DIY bracket. Doing that would make it a hell of a lot easier to find gearboxes!

Or rather brother Arshad's friend!

Not too hard to do, I vaguely looked at it when his car was in my unit for a "while" but having no need of e30 speedos I didn;t go any further.

Sounds like an interesting way. Not sure i'd want the chopper wheel wizzing around in the tunnel unguarded. One knock with a stone and it could get very messy.

I've no speedo at the moment with an E30 box, was planning to fit a universal speedo with magnetic pickup sensors at some point.

Output flange on the driveshaft/diff so not in the tunnel.

Aftermarket with mag pickup is the same principle.

mobster, if you carry out this you will need to fit the e30 dashboard and clocks cos the clocks are electrical pulse and not speedo driven, get the e30 box and take it to a gearbox center and get a speedo gear from another e21 gearbox and tell them you want it fitted, OR ask to swap out the gear internals!!

Forget the pulse converter!

The only box I know you can fit a mech speedo is the 265 as it was designed for it never seen it done on a stock e30 box

ashtad took the chopper wheel from in the e30 diff and mounted on the output shaft along with a bracket for the orginial sender, there used to be a kit for this from metric mechanic in the states

for the speedo you need to glue an e30 speedo into the e21 cluster with a spacer ring as the e30 has a smaller diameter speedo

Just noticed this thread. Yes I'm not sure how it works as my mate did it - just know it works!

If you're ever up Manchester mobster you're welcome to have a look. I could always post pictures, but JKR bad's is the same principle.
