Niel is a good bloke so lsd will be okay, but you need to pay a good transmission shop to put in an e21 case, normally about 200-250 inc new seals and bearings.

I have a few contacts

That's a lot for the gubbins only. I paid quite a bit less for an e21 LSD complete and in excellent condition delivered from the USA. Check American ebay before commiting to that.

Do you just need a diff? ROb will probably have one or two spare.

Yes that’s the road I went down good thread too. I gave £300 for the e36 LSD with new clutch plate things in it guy was real helpful too he showed me how to split and build the diff. they are rebuildable the plates are type 004 ZF plates (same as mk2 escort plates) they can be easily got i give my local Hydraulic man £20 to get me new seals including spares. What I did differently to that guy was I ground away the casing from both sides i think it is a better job. Stronger and seals better. Their really is only a couple of mm in it the open diff has flat spots (windows) which let it twist up out where as the LSD is a solid cylinder apart from the windows they are identical in size. i swapped the side bearing races to match the e36 side bearings. i am however going to swap the crown wheel and pinion for a 3.91 set or 4.10 whichever comes in a 316. i think that 3.45 is a bit tall

I also learned that to work out the diff ratio u just count the teeth on the small cog (pinion) and divide that into the number of teeth on the big ring gear (crown wheel)

i think that the e36 diff is a good option because it really only came on the later 318's so its much fresher than an e21. Its also much cheaper and because you have to grind a little casing away the diff unit must be a little bigger therefore better (but don’t quote me on that)
