Spinning gear stick

Post by pilly »

It hasn't been a big problem (in relation to the other) but now i think its time i fixed it.
The gear stick rotates freely when you twist it. Is there a common problem with this or what??
Thought i would just get an idea as to what it might be. Cause its non stop rain here at the moment and my shed is currently occupied.
Thanks.

Was just having a look on realoem. Its possibly the compression spring/parts that join the upper and lower part of the gear stick that have come loose or are shot. Have you pulled your rubber gaiter up and had a look if you can see anything going on underneath ?

Mine has the same "problem"
As also was thinking that this is not a big issue, (and mainly thinking that it is something that can't be solved) It never bothered me very much...I have always thought it was like that from the factory...
So I'll be watching this thread with great interest !!

Theres a bit of a problem for me with the gaitor as in the person who owned it before has screwed the gaitor from an e30 into place. I had tried to remove it but it was such a pain. I'm thinking that the springs would probably be the reason. I will look into that when i get a chance, but is the stick meant to be firm and not meant to spin??
Thanks

Cant say mine spins freely. I dont see how it could be normal when it means your gear nob is facing all the wrong directions for the selection map. Or am i missing something here ?

The gear knob on it is a bit oddly shaped so it doesn't really help. but if this is what i'll have to live with than live with it i shall. What sort of 'non standard' gear knobs do you guys have? I would like an original looking one i suppose any ideas?

Sorry, I may have not understood...Is it a matter of spinning KNOB, or spinning STICK?
About the stick was my question to Walloth+Nesch (+their negative reply).
About the knob: I Used to have this problem with the factory knob. At a point it started spinning freely, and, what is more, it was easily removed from the stick. I replaced it with a leather one (the one with the BMW mblem on top) and the problem stopped ever since.
But the spinning problem of the stick still exists (as it probably has always been like that)
