My '82 drift build

Post by e21_driftmonkey »

Started off with a bone stock '82 320i.

Using front and rear fenders from a VW bug I've began fabricating a one off custom wide body fender kit.
I will be fabricating the custom all metal side-skirts and front and rear bumper fascias in the near future.

The drivetrain is being taken from an '87 325e.
Updates coming...

Comments are welcome. Thanks.

Nice, I'd like to see what this looks like when finished :)
I wonder about your engine choice, the 325e engine is a low rpm high torque engine. Won't you be better off with a 325i engine for drifting?

I decided to use the 2.7L (M20B27) block and drop the compression using the 2.5L (M20B25) connecting rods. Then, adding a sequential dual-turbo setup so the powerband will be closer to that of a super-charged engine but without the parasitic drain of the charger's belt, nor having the limitations of boosting in the high rpm ranges.

I haven't decided on cams or a valve setup yet but am very open to any suggestions from everyone, as this is my first build on a BMW.

Here's a few new photos of the new fuel (petrol) door and rear fender flares.

And everyone knows what an engine looks like... Here's the donor M20B27:

standard 325i is enough to smoke them up easy in 3rd. i should know.....

if this is your first drift build then id air on the side of cheap and reliability tbh.
building a fancy engine you will most likley break while your learning doesn't make sence.
a 2.7 doesnt like revving, the stroke is too long for constant high revs.
you can say "yeah but i'll build an engine that makes power mid range" but the man foot precedence while drifting means you will break it!
with m20's..... start with the standard low comp 325i, then (and only then.) when your drifting skills have out grown the power you've got.... turbo it.
thats my experienced advice.
plus with limited power you will learn how to drift properly..... before spoiling yourself with outright power. it'll make you a better drifter in the long run.

I don't wish to come off as arrogant, so please do not take this personally.
My experience lies far beyond childish weekend burn-outs in a deserted Wal-Mart parking lot.

These are a few of my other builds I've successfully completed:
1988 Iroc Z-28 Camaro (Drift & Drag) est @ 650 bhp
1955 Chevrolet pick-up (Drag) dyno'd @ 867.3 whp
1992 Geo Storm AWD Twin-Turbo (Auto-X) dyno'd @ 358.7 whp (This is also the vehicle I've successfully used the dual sequential-turbo setup on)

Like I said "First BMW drift build"
Also, thank you for the input on which motor to use, it is very welcome and appreciated, but that is why I'm using the M20B25 connecting rods in the M20B27 block.
