strange handling on acceleration

Post by drjim »

OK chaps my Baur is basically done. It has new springs and shocks, but all the bushes etc are the originals/what was on the car when I got it. Engine is a 325i high comp on motronic, diff etc as per original 320 auto setup.

I have driven two other E21's in recent years, the blue 316 which had all new bushes/wishbones etc plus extra ARB's, but it's a while since I sold it. Then the slug which has basically solid mounted rear end with solid bushes. Only rubber in the system is in the front wishbone bushes. Springs are rock solid, it effectively has no suspension travel, and goes exactly where I point it.

So I'm driving the Baur, and I have noticed that as I accelerate it pushes the front end out to the right side, lift off - eg to change gear - and I can feel it swerving back to the left. It's quite unsettling when otherwise cruising along the motorway! Steering feels pretty vague - Murran is sorting me some new bushes for the rack, which will hopefully make it feel more pointy, but has anyone encountered the power on/off thing I am describing. Am I just being oversensitive or having driven a FWD focus for a year forgotten how real cars feel?

Anyone?

Jim

The only time I have felt stuff like that was an 02 with shagged rear subframe bushes.

Was thinking about subframe bushes, maybe it's moving around too much. Not put the metal bracket/cover things over them yet, but don't think they contribute anything to rigidity. Might get some new bushes.

It was like when I dipped clutch everything lost the tension keeping it in place and was almost rear wheel steer.
