I need technical documentation of CoilOver for E21

Hi from spain.

I have to homologate my car for rally racing and i have a nice Gaz CoilOver Suspension.

I need to pass the technical verification and the Federation ask me for any old document that attesting that the Group 2 or 4 or A mounted coil over suspension.

They ask me for a technical documentation, it is not valid photos or press articules .

I have the Fia Homologation nº 5014 but in this dont homologate the coil over.


I hope you can help me.

No i dont.
Gaz send me a paper with the technical data of their suspension but i need some paper that attesting the bmw e21 mounted any coilover suspension in 1980's.

Hi it looks like there might be evidence of coilovers being used in the 1976 eggenberger Group 2 car as above- however I think you may struggle to have the latest GAZ set-up accepted unless they are period perfect copies of something optimal produced in period by a tuning firm- Eggenberger, Alpina, Hartge etc etc

In British Isles we can buy a proofed set of homologation papers from the MSA in Colnbrook for around £25 (sorry if I am out of date- I bought my set a long time ago!) see:

In Spain you will have your own MSA authorised by FIA

I bougth yesterday the Fia homologation number 5014 in my Fia federation autorized.
In this homologation papers dont figure any homologation for a coil over suspension. In this homologation only figure a knock off hub, a security fuel tank, and a 3 diferent calipers for the brakes.
This papers is sealed form FIA and is in German and English.

I dont belive there is the ONLY modification aproveed. It is imposible, so i need another FIa homologation.

but the whole point of the FIA thing is to create cars now that could have raced in period with the same modifications that were available at the time
My race experience relates to an earlier decade x 2 than the E21

But I believe that the principles apply

We are allowed a bit of latitude in suspension bushes for eg most large race cars now use those delurum or similar needle roller bushes (which are FIA approved and Goodwood eligible- don't ask) and in other areas- you cannot uninvent race pad technology for example
The rules in Europe have tended to make the really competitive cars exceedingly expensive as they must keep to homologation specs and the space to optimise and thereby gain an advantage is reduced- so it should level the playing field but it does not
I mean REALLY expensive since the rules are so strict the lengths that are gone to to gain an advantage are enormous
Shelby Mustnags = quicker than GT40s??? Titanium..................
This does have an upside though!
It avoids the situation we face in South Africa where every A- Healey 3000 racing has a toyota 5 speed gearbox.
The Mustnag TransAm champ winner has current BMW M3 brakes
Of course the tables are turned when a Brit turns up in an ICS refugee car (A monstrous spaceframe Chev Mailibu- Yes its that Minshaw family again- Note to Jason and Alan this is not a dig---(I would like an entry to Chomondley POP next year!)
And then blows them away and then they complain because a huge budget has been spent with knowledge and the car no longer conforms to anything in Europe- but since they have no rules may run down there -how can they complain....? But they do!
So my advice is keep your head down
if you are quick in a new series don't do it by miles upon first acquaintance
and the FIA rules although irritating are a sensible line in the sand

for eg
Butch could run 17 wheels and much bigger AP racing brakes- heading towards ICS rules
Why not fit ABS - via racelogic and whilst one is at it a traction control set-up/launch control?
This is ludicrous- Thing is it would no longer be a lairy Camaro with 600 bhp and a live rear axle 15 inch wheels and 11 inch brakes (per original)!
If you want to build a silhouette car then by all means pick a glassfibre camaro bodyshell over an F3 chassis with a mid engined Chev small block and why not supercharge it whilst you are at it?

Sorry I have some strong views over this issue as well as some experience from both ends- from over officious race organisers/scrutineers as well unlimited budget cheque book racers !

optimise what you have within the regs
