What first choice for improvement for a 316?
Talking for a not much larger scale improvement, trying to keep it M10 based in order to keep parts already improved in the past (such as gearbox, suspension etc.)

Buy Jim's engine. 170bhp and reliability, plus a healthy chunk of induction noise.

Re: What first choice for improvement for a 316?
I was thinking of something legal... And legal for the M10 316 1.6 means not more than +25% => maximum 2000cc and 120 bhp, however, for the second issue no one would tell
Thus, this engine, being an M10, could pass as a 2000cc (and horsepower would be "named" 120 )

My engine you discuss is probably a tiny bit over 2000cc as it has been bored a little, is indeed an M10, and apart from the S14 intake, coilpacks and DTA ECU could indeed pass as any other M10. Not 100% sure it's still for sale, but if the price is right it can be!

You are pushing thought into my brain...
I don't know (the problem with me is that I have not yet decided to replace the 1.6, as it still is very healthy)...However, what is the right price you are asking for this little monster?

A E21 316 (1.6L) has small valves and small airflow head circuit.
You can spend a lot of money to make it a happy 316 (about 120hp and a bit more of torque).
Best recomendation is to put a E21 2.0 and improve with a better carb (Weber 38/38 simultaneus or two DCOE 40/40), and in a future a cam and exhaust system.
With you current differential (4.10:1) might accelerate more than other standard BMW E21 m10 and you still have an E21 M10 engine (for originality

Assuming you've already got better tyres, brakes, suspension...
I'd got the e12/e21 2.0 M10 from 75(ish) has sightly higher compression as standard (9.3 rather than 9 from memory). 130 hp on injection, so your twin webbers should do that easily (although won't be as good low down).
