So who wants to build a REAL IMSA replica?

Post by polov8 »

Funny the things that show up on ebay sometimes...

Spendy for sure, but talk about some rare parts!

Most parts for these engines are still available new, you won't believe how many are still in use for competition purposes today. Not sure about the current price of a new head if still available, but recon heads with new valves and guides do abt 4K these days.

M12/7's so the non-turbo version is widely used, amazing how many cars in prototype and classic endurance racing still use this engine because of its high output combined with reliability. And then classic sportscars, F2 and the E21 Group 5 cars of course!

BTW you see the same with Ford's DFV 3 litre F1 engine. Affordable and reliable so nearly all historic F1 cars use this lump

Certainly an incredible engine, boosted or otherwise. I suspect the gear driven cams are pretty noisey, so I won't bother after all..... ;)

Mind you, if a DFV came up :D

M12 you mean? That is a 4 cylinder based on the M10 bottom end, combined with a multivalve head developed by BMW Motorsport in 1976, later that evolved into the M88 cylinder head for the M1.

Not sure its a straight fit but it should be possible to fit it on any M10 bottom end. That's also the legend about the F1 M12/13 engines: rumor has it that they used old M10 bottom ends they kept in the back yard for some time to make sure all tensions were out of the metal making it the strongest block, able to cope with the >1300 BHP outputs.

Certainly would be a kick ass engine, but way too spendy. Makes an S14 look like a budget option!
