Clutch noise

Post by Miked »

Hi, could anyone help, I have just bought an 82 315 with super low mileage! But the car had minor flood damage and the clutch was seized. When I got the car home we got it started and there was a strange scraping/catching noise coming from the bell housing/clutch area, got the car in the garage, had the clutch relined, cleaned everything else up and new clutch bearing from bmw. Put everything back together expecting the noise to have disappeared but the exact same noise is still there which goes when the clutch is pressed.
Does anyone know what this could be? It's a sort of scraping/grinding noise which sounds like something is catching.

Thanks
Mike.

Hi mike, sounds like a real head scratcher you got there. Hard to say anything without seeing it but I'll be cheeky and try. I'm guessing you attached the throwout bearing to the clutch fork when you assembled cause that could be it. Also, the inspection plate at the bottom of the bell housing, is it bent and fitted flush? The only other thing I can think of is, you said it was flooded. How badly? Its possible the noise isn't coming from the clutch at all but maybe its the trans itself. Could be the bearings are rusted and they go quiet when you ally pressure on the input shaft by depressing the clutch. Have you checked the fluid in there....might have water in it. Just a thought. Only other thing would be take it apart and double check everything is tourqed and lined up right. Wouldn't be the first time a throw out bearing fell on me when sliding the trans back on.

Hi, thanks for the advice I'll run it by my mate who's a bit more mechanically minded than me, could be the trans as the noise was there before we messed about with the clutch so can't be something we've done wrong and the clutch works fine now.
Cheers mate I'll let you know how we get on

Turned out it was the gearbox after all, after I had it checked by an expert! Cheers nas for the gearbox by the way.
