Honda S2000 engine into E21

Post by sjuggins »

OK, so I'm thinking about the future direction for the E21 and I fancy something different. I've considered stroking the M42, supercharging or swapping in a M52 etc. but they've all been done and I really fancy something high revving like the S2000 AP1/AP2 engines. I've come across a lot of E30's and 2002's running these engines and figure it's definitely achievable, right? (isn't everything for the right price lol).

Engine and box sells for around £2k on eBay. I could probably get a whole car for £4k and then take whatever I need from the donor vehicle (could you swap the whole drive train and rear end over?).

Has anybody considered such a swap? I know the die-hard BMW fans will say no but I want to build something fun for me.

Thoughts and advice please folks :driving

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Thanks for the YouTube clip but not entirely sure what I'm watching? Has the e21 been converted?

E21 sounds like swaped engine
S2000 sounds like stock

I believe M20B27 or M20B28 could be very fast!

Ah ok thanks.

Aware the M20's can be fast but fancy something a bit different, such as the high revving rice rocket engines which scream along.

one will be made and available after 2016 season

K20 head, K24 bottom, 2.5 liters, 8000 rpm with a e30 gearbox, should throw out 270-280 hp

Nice, is it your car that will be running that setup? Build details please :thumbsup

Wondering how difficult the swap is and what bits are needed. I know the SR20DET has been done but fancy a NA, high revving motor.

Doesn't the S2000 turn the other way around? Could you explain how a E30 gearbox can work with a motor that turns the wrong way around?

Are you referring to the engine mounting direction or crank rotation direction? They're mounted inline and the crank rotates clockwise (if viewed from the front).

rotation can be solved by flipping the diff.

what about a turbo r1 engine, or other bike engine?? zzr, gsxr, cbr, v twin?

bike engine would be cool but so much work I reckon.

I've been offered a professionally rebuilt decent spec SR20DET engine, box, loom, prop, paddle clutch etc. for a good price which I'm quite tempted by.

Please will you do a build thread on this if you do go this route? Thanks :)

Yep absolutely will. I've already got a thread going on the restoration/modification in the 4 cylinder forum. I'll make sure to detail the engine build.
