Speedo broken?

Post by sparkle »

Hi.
I have an E21 315 that has recently had an earlier 2.0 m10 swapped in.
The speedo worked fine for a while. It now sits at 160kph and stays there while hesitating slightly.
(I think it may not have seen higher speeds before and couldn't handle it!)

If you drive the car in reverse, it slowly winds back to 0kph, but as soon as you drive off again it goes up to 160kph and stays there.

Any thought what this may be? Is this the speedo cable, the drive, or the speedometer?

You'll have to change the speedo unit. Cable drive seems ok.

I've seen several speedo unit at ebay.

Just make sure you get a speedo with the right conversion factor (see bottom of the dial, W=0808 EG for example) to match your diff's final drive, also see viewtopic.php?f=61&t=1629
