1981 320/6 in NZ

Post by Thayat »

Evenin' all.

I've finally taken the time to slap up a few pics to support this forum that I have been quietly reading for some time. I have owned this e21 for two and a half years and am slowly getting her up to an acceptable standard. The previous owner had her for 16 years and kept her in pretty good condition. Despite intentions to use her as a simple runabout I could resist tinkering to mimic my Dad's old TWR Alpina.
So far this has meant:
- fix rust in driver's door sill
- replace 3 spd auto with 5-spd dogbox
- new bilsteins and Jamex springs
- BBS 15 inchers (very rare down here) and Toyo rubber
- custom alloy radiator
- more rust removal and partial repaint
- BMW Motorsport rear spoiler
- Alpina front spoiler
Current projects:
- putting basic 2.7 together
- upgrade to vented 323 front brakes (leave rear drums)
- more rust removal from bottom of A-pillars and rework from earlier rust removal where people paid to do a professional job failed...
- new carpet (if only you could still get original carpets)
- fitting leather recaro front seats from my brother's race e24

After that...
- drive and enjoy :D

Daniel
(hope this works)

TWR? i thought that Tom Walkinshaw was sole supplier for parts and builders for alpina in the UK only? for the rest of the work was from alpina exporting to other bmw delaers.... france had Garage Du Bac and UK had Tom Walkinshaw, and now its shitty Sytner (crap people to deal with)

Hi Jimi,
while I am now in NZ, I am English. Back in the early 80's my Dad bought an Alpina e21 second hand, which I now believe to be one of Tom's having read various articles and posts across the forums. It would be great to have more info about these cars but as people around here have said, TWR and Alpina are pretty secretive about those early years in the UK.

Cheers

Now it makes sence, ive once spoken to Tom Walkinshaw and took a long time to get in touch with him, anything i asked about alpina he didnt seem interested!! he just said its better to contact sytner, then i got pissed off about it and came out with it and said "but you were the guy who brought alpina in to the country and anything im asking you , your just saying any info needed to contact sytner.. then says to me - sorry but alpina screwed me over in the early eighties and have no intrest in them" so i asked him how many production cars were made from TWR and he nentioned cannot remember as the paper work for his built time with alpina in the UK are all locked up in the volt and alpina were requesting this information but not getting released..

Sounds like a dodgy one here made more E21 alpinas then contracted too without the plaque build plate cos from what ive heard the last batch didnt have a plaque build plate... maybe an inhouse close the doorr ssshhhhhh alpinas sneaked out of the workshop

I have some old pictures of Tom Walkinshaw in the county raceing and some E12 articles, ill dig them out and scan then post for ya!!!

Any thing that TWR made regards to alpinas and also the French Garage Du bac were as good as alpina itself, but we have sytner over here and there f*** crap, id rather go to alpina my self and bring a car back!!

Do you have any pix of the TWR your dad has, would be excellent to see what the results look like....

regards

Hi mate,
thanks for that. It seems to be the sad story that most talk about. Unfortunately I can only find one pic of my Dad's old car. We sold it shortly after arriving in NZ back in the mid 80's. I have built mine up visually to look the same except for colour. It had the motorsport rear spoiler with Alpina lettering, 15 inch BBS. I can't remember the front so I've put an Alpina spoiler on mine just in case :-)

Its probably one of those situations where childhood memories distort things slightly, but hey, I'm happy plugging away.

If you find any of those pics and articles I'd love to see them.

Cheers

Didn't Crayford do Alpina conversions? I'm sure they did some of the Alpina A4s's that were based on the 2002tii.
