Swap instrument cluster..

Post by Reck »

I don't know if I should do this since it is altering the 'factory' spec of my car. Where my tach should be there is a huge clock, I mean this is handy and all but doesn't give me much excuse for being late. Can I swap in the cluster from another model i.e. the 320?

More importantly, should I do it?

Swap another cluster in and just put the original under your bed in case you ever want to re-fit it. Any e21 cluster will fit but you'll have to check what wires you need for the rev counter?

You need the rev counter for a 4 pot, 6 pot rev counters have something different electronically, can't remember what off top of my head!

I have two clusters in my pile of bits - one may have a 4 pot tacho in.

If your car is a 6 pot and I am confused, I think I have one of them too!

You're right Jim. Is it some resistor or something?

I'm getting flashbacks to a circuit diagram, there's an extra diode or something in one of them which converts 6 pulses (or 4) into what the tacho reads.

there's a thread somewhere on here about it, in the meantime I'll check what clusters I have!

yes ! But you will need the button that fits in the dash below the clocks that is used to set the time! I changed a 4cylinder tach to run with 6 cylinder engine by swaping a resistor inside for one with a value 33% higher...edd..
