newbie from wales

Hi guys, recently made my first post on here and thought I should introduce myself.

Just keep it short and sweet - Male, I am 26 and from Wales. My interest started for the e21 after reading an article in the PPC mag in June of this year. I am a fan of all things retro and the e21 fits right into that category, now I want one.
I have a small amount knowledge of mechanics and consider myself to be competent enough to pick up a spanner/welder/hammer and “give it go”. Having said that I work in the automotive industry so I am surrounded by people who would be happy to pass on advice to me so feel comfortable taking on a project.

I have been browsing the market on and off since June but started looking more seriously in the last few weeks. Still yet to find something that I want but I know it’s not a great time to sell and therefore also to buy.
I am interested in doing an engine conversion and after reading many articles online, thought that putting an m20b25 into an e21 would be a good start for me, relatively simple but effective and a good knowledge builder.

Having said this what are your thoughts on a newbie getting stuck into a job like this? Is the m20b25 a good conversion to do?
Do you think my idea of conversion is not cool and that I should keep to the standard engine range for purity?
Which is best base model to start with if I have a conversion in mind?

Hi mate, cheapest and easiest conversion really, as its pretty much a straight swap with a little wiring to do.
best model to have is the 320 as they seem to be cheap enough still the 323i now has some serious scene tax.

The 316 has a different front subframe and weedy brakes you would have to hunt around to get all the parts you need

Hi mate and welcome.

Personally, I would just go with whatever you can get that's solid. Whatever model you get can easily be upgraded or changed or whatever. A solid 316 is a way better place to start than a rusty 323 in my opinion.

I happen to know an e21 in Wales that has a few choice bits on it.

my next project will be throwing a M20b25 in my baur. will probably do it next summer. saying that, the amount of money ive spent getting the 320/6 running I should of done it straight away!!!! hindsght is a wonderful thing
