1978 323i S50 Propan New update 2017!
Re: 1978 323i Propan S50B32
You don't need to keep the plastic box if you strip the redundant wires.

New box not gonna happen...Jeroen wrote:Perhaps you can make a slightly smaller box instead. Jeremy's car sadly crashed heavily a couple of years ago. He bought another chassis off me to rebuild it and make it even better. If time allows he works on it, but just at a low pace as he needs most of his spare time for his own business (car body shop).
Don't want to tell too much as I'd like to leave that up to him but afaik the S50 is sold, he now has a S54 E46 M4 engine and driveline that is already made to fit. Chassis is almost ready for new paint. All 'n all he is taking things quite a step further than with the previous conversion, the new version will feature ABS and ASC+T for example. How's that on an e21?!
Cool what Jeremy's doing
With the use of abs sensors and gyro from e46 it is absolute possible to use abs etc.
A friend om mine did the same with he's e30.
I guess s54 is the new project in a couple years

S50B32 with alpha N is in my opinion a better engine than S54

Re: 1978 323i Propan S50B32
And why is that? I've driven S50B30, S50B32 and S54B32 and the S54 was the smoothest engine to my experience and felt stronger in the lower/mid rev range. But of course engine condition has its influence as well!

Mechanic way the s54 is better.
But to make it run as it should, the only way is OEM Ems/dme etc.
And that includes all wiring and abs etc from the e46.
There are more of S54- easier to find a good engine and gearbox and parts at all.
Its easier to fix them etc.
But the work needed to make it work perfect is not worth it to swap yet.
And I have not yet hearded of any standalone ems that work desent with the vanos.
With vanos block off and camshafts only for trackdays any ecu will work. And all power from 6000- up
So until i find any standalone that can use the vanos as oem does i'll try.
Or they figure out the software to run oem whit out wiring, abs etc.
And i now a couple of guys trying to make a software to s54 so you dont need all wiring etc.
But until now the one's that are on the market is indeed only an improved emergency program with prefixed fuel, ignition etc.
That's what they call Alpha N. It works, but not 100%
So overall- my S50 stays a couple of years I guess.

I'm running an Emerald ECU on an S54 and it controls the Vanos just fine. Its making over 200 lbft from below 3krpm.
Here is power graph comparing mine which is a completely standard S54 engine running Emerald, to an S50B32 with Schrick cams, locked vanos ARP's and mapped BMW ECU. Both on the same dyno within 2 days, same weather comditions.
The Torque curves for Vanos vs Non-Vanos are night and day apart.

Cool, yet- the problem is that most of the tuners etc here in Norway or Sweden don`t now the Emerald and how to map it properly i think.
I`m shure they would be using it if so. Both Haltech,Autronic and Vipec it tryed i think. I must add that it`s probably 1 year since I checked this.
I sure gonna check it out to clarify if the common tuners can dyno and tune this ecu.
Thanks, and very nice curves you`ve got there
Do you now whats the asking price for Emerald ecu with wiring loom? And do you use OEM crank trigger, tps, lamda, inlet temperature?

S54 about 500 euro to get the stock ecu to run standalone with no can bus input, and keep the drive by wire

Re: 1978 323i Propan S50B32
And means it uses all sensors to tune itself in like original in an e46?
Not just a modification of the emergency map?
And vanos etc works as i should be?
No fault in system?

This guy is the cheapest
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewit ... cmd=VIDESC
Pretty common in UK e30 swaps. Take the option to keep the drive my wire as the intake uses the ICV to control the Rpm at low load rather than the throttles
