Re: e21 type 1 to 2 conversion questions
Hello and welcome! I'm actually doing something similar between having a BMW E3 series 1 upgraded to a series 2. Anyway, the advice I was given was to cross reference part numbers from something like realoem.com between the twp models and that will be the most accurate comparison.
From what I know though, here are some of the following differences between the series 1 and two cars.
Door mirrors: series 1 chrome, series 2 plastic and electric
Front valance, shallower on a series 1
Rear light lenses different
Dashboard has different switchgear between models
Indicator stalks differ
Gearknob is a screw in type on a series 1 as opposed to a push type on a series 2
Interior seat trim differs
Sure someone can add to the list.

No problem
I think the sheet metal, apart from the front valance should be the same (I'll wait for someone to correct me though). Sheet metal is the same as far as I know though.

Front seat chassis mounting points differ, door window mechanism is different but doors are interchangeable.

Mk 1 seat belts connect to straps bolted to tunnel, Mk 2 fasten into side of seat.

the front suspension is different on the series 1. but are interchangeable with the later type. you also have a different braking servo system. The heating and ventilation controls are different.

Subframe, ARB and control arms are all different too.
Re: e21 type 1 to 2 conversion questions
Radiator support panel is different too - not sure whether this effects whether the shallower series 1 front valance fits.
It is a better looking valance though with the bigger vents in it.

But back to the initioal Q, if he has a good 4 cil chassis and can use a 320/6 as a donor, he may be able to swap many parts still I guess?!
