Hi everybody! Yep, its true... I've got a car addiction, but I have no plans of getting rid of it

I just bought my first BMW a week ago. Very exciting! '82 320i. It's in great shape, but I got an outstanding deal on it because it has some FI issues. Unfortunately I'm not only new to BMWs, but new to k-jetronic as well. I'm hoping you guys can answer my bonehead questions, tho.

Here's a pic of my new baby:

I had some issues with the k-jet in my car as well, when I bought it. It is now fixed. What seems to be the problem with your car?

It's biggest issue is that it just hasn't been driven much in the past two years. The smell of old gas when I fired up before buying it was absolutely terrible. It also has a problem starting when cold, but I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. Still working on giving everything a good cleaning.

Cold start problems is usually a faulty cold start valve. I took one from an Audi 100 -89 -90 something, and it worked. Often k-jet parts are the same independent of auto brand. Old SAAB, Volvo, Audi, Mercedes often have parts you can use.

Not sure what you guys might consider original, but I do plan on a few upgrades.

The handling is pretty atrocious, to me at least. Springs are way too soft and it needs better dampeners for sure. Haven't really had a chance to take a look at suspension bushings, but I suspect I'll want to replace them all with polyurethane. Whatever springs I get will probably lower the car a bit, but I'm not into slamming cars to the ground. Don't want to lower it beyond what the geometry can handle.

I plan on just tuning the stock motor the best I can for now. Maybe after I'm done with suspension upgrades, I'll work on the motor. The stock HP is 100hp right? A little low for a 1.8 in my opinion. My 1.8L Fiat with minor mods puts out around 120hp. I have no clue what the potential of these motors might be. After driving it a bit with uprated suspension I might not feel its necessary to do anything to the motor. If I can't get the knack for tuning K-jet, it's going to get megasquirted, lol...

As far as appearance, I love the way it looks the way it is. Including the rectangle fog lights! Very good late 70's-early 80's styling. I think I might want a front spoiler at some point, but nothing silly. Basically just an extension of the built in mini chin spoiler. I really like BMW stock wheels, too. I'll just have to find some good rubber for them.

Dan,

Like the looks of your 320i - It is Baltic Blue, right? What color is the interior and 5 speed or Auto? Love the dual pin stripe and the original fog lamps. Unusual they are still there.

If you are able to do work on the car yourself you should get the Haynes Manual for it. I believe Bavarian Autosport still carries it. They are also a good source for parts as well as your local dealer.

If you can find a mechanic or friend with knowledledge of K-Jet you will be most of the way there. I believe BMW, Mercedes and Audi used K-jet in the late 70s and early 80s. Are you a member of BMWCCA.ORG ? Their tech guy is good on K-jet and the annual meeting will be held this summer in Dallas - I see the TX plates and wonder if you are close?

Once you get your fuel line issues sorted out and the K-Jet back to specs. your plans for suspension, tires, etc can be done when time and money permit.

Post on this site or PM me as you choose. I am not a mechanic, but have had mine since it was new and may be able to give some guidance.

Best, Mike

It's a 5 speed. I don't do autos!

Here's a pic of the interior:

There are pieces missing from the center console and the area around the climate control knobs needs some TLC. All of that damage was from when the PO's radio was stolen. Of course the hazard button is broken. Common on these cars, right? The carpets need a good cleaning, but all in all the interior is in good shape. I'm told the upholstery isn't original, tho. Can someone shed some light on that?

It's a dark blue color. Baltic Blue is the name of it? That's good to know because I need to get some touch up paint for some nicks here and there.

I have the Haynes Manual, but not too impressed with it. It seems like it'd be a good manual for the earlier cars, but not the later ones. I'll have to look around for service manual. I'm currently looking for a good diagram of all the vacuum lines. I would also like a diagram of all the various parts that don't seem to be covered in any manuals I see.
Like what is this thing? http://www.mirafiori.com/~danb/cars/320i/thisthing.jpg
It has a vacuum line and an electrical connector, and thats it. Also, is that WOT switch stock? Doesn't look very stock to me, but who knows.

I'll look into BMWCCA.ORG. Thanks for mentioning it. I need all the help I can get at the moment :)

Dan,

I was so stunned at the appearance of your car, I missed you are in Austin. I great place to live and you should have some good resources for the car, too.

I checked mine today and from what I can see, the switch for the WOT appears to be identical. What I could not find is the valve? hose or connection to the engine. Is that unit independent as I read in your message or is it connected to anything else? On my car there is no connection at all to the engine. The metal is clean and untapped.

The large hose running from top left past the oil dipstick and to the bottom of the picture over the air intake does not exist on mine either. Where does the hose start and end?

Mine does not have the flexible metal conduit running past the brake fluid reservoir, either. Assume this runs into the fuse box. Mine is a fabric covered cable running on the other side of the strut housing.

That said, my 320i was one of the last batch brought into the country and also was approved for California. Is it possible some changes were made to electronics and tuning to eliminate parts and make inventory suitable for anywhere in the country. I have seen earlier 320is models and the fusebox was different, so maybe other items changed the last year.

Have you checked out all the emission control components? I believe they are necessary for proper engine function.

The interior color is beige, but I don't remember the seats being dark. Maybe replaced or Reupholstered? (a friend had the Baltic Blue exterior with beige cloth seats. Very nice.)

Your hood insulation is starting to go, too. An easy but messy change.

I can't get pictures posted today, but will do after the weekend. Tell me by PM with E-mail and will send.

The engine compartment looks very clean.

Sorry I haven't replied in several days...

Convert it to an automatic?!? Blasphemer! I'd never sell/trade/give the car to someone that was going to swap a slush box into it.

I'm glad you all are impressed with the looks! The car does look great, but it's just a good 10 footer. Up close you can see all the little imperfections, lol...

I believe that hose you are asking about is the fuel supply line. It was cracked and leaking badly. I replaced it with a steel braided one. Much better quality :) The metal conduit you see is actually plastic and was run by the PO for the sound system which got stolen. It's got a big fat power cable in it that runs to the trunk where the amp was. It'll will come in handy when I relocate the battery.
