Most certainly a 4 speed getrag. Not sure why it has 232 and not 242 markings but as far as I know they are not to be trusted anyway.

struggling to figure it out myself to be honest! a lot of the ident markers seem to point to things that aren't there. Perhaps its got something to do with it being a v.early e21? No idea. Bit crap as I've offered the box out for sale in various places, now I have no idea what it is!

Ok,I have spoken to the prior owner.

She is 100% on the car being 5 speed and it working with no issues (yes I did ask her if she meant 5 forward gears AND reverse :loll ).

However, since the internet verdict is that it is 4 speed, and in order to answer many questions - I will take the end plate off IAW the BMW IPC, photograph the shaft & synchro's etc, replace with cork gasket / Thiokol, put fresh oil in and post pics.

That should answer questions on condition/gears/condition.

So you have the gearbox with you? I'd certainly try the shift pattern (if you do not attach the regular gear lever but just stick a screw driver through the shifter axle please note the pattern is mirrored so beware not to identify reverse as 5th gear.

What am I saying this? The latest series of E21 M10 5-speeds does not have the extension but then it could still be a 5 speed. Never knew but we found out recently with a Dutch member's gearbox.

Early e21 4-speed. Not 2002,clutch slave cylinder is different. Some parts are "same casting" 232 vs. 242 and thats why those both have 232 castingmarks.
Latest m10/m20 5-speed 240-Getrag have bigger "ass" than 242.

245,240,242 in pic.
