Various technical questions for 315

Post by giorgio2g »

Hello to all!
I really struggled to come up with a nice title for this topic, but i couldn't think something more specific. That's because i have a few questions and probably i will have some more in the future to write about here.
So let's begin.
First i want to add strut bars, one in the front and one at the back. At the front however because of the huge air filter of my engine my mechanic is not sure if a strut bar can fit. I have the classic round air filter and the bar i am thinking to buy is this one: https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/front-s ... 03-01.html
Could somebody tell me if it's going to fit? Also i thought of an alternative solution. What if i could change the air filter with an new one in a different shape? Right now i have the stock solex 1B2 carburator. Are there any other filters apart the stock that could fit with this carburator?
Talking of carburators i have also thought to replace the stock that i have now. Have anyone done this to a 315 and did it worth it?

Last but not least a steering wheel question. I have a nardi wooden steering wheel and a personal hub. Image
The hub however is short and as a result when i am driving there is not enough space between the steering wheel and the switches for the turn signals and wipers, for my hands. That's why i need a taller hub. After a search i found those two:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-6er-E24-M63 ... Gy&vxp=mtr
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Luisi-Italy-Ste ... XR&vxp=mtr
The problem is that i can't find any dimensions. Anyone knows which one is taller?
Sorry for the long post. :)

My recommendation for a carb replacement is a new Weber 32/36 DGEV. You have the necessary 12V connection for the e-choke in your 315. Great idling, adjustment and response. Forget the 1B2. Take it down and you will see why. But the Weber does not fit on a 315 manifold. You will need a pre '80 Solex inlet manifold from a 316/318, the bracket for the throttle cable and an outlet manifold with downpipe from same car. After these modifications, your 315 will not be the same anymore.

Thanks mate for the suggestion. Will it also be more economical or more aggressive only? Also i found this kit, do you think it has everything i need for the conversion? http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/product-p/wk204.htm

Both, the carb response will be much better, and fuel consumption will be reduced. I promise, you will see it when you got the 1B2 down. It is like a moped carb.
The kit in the link is the right one. But all offered links refer mostly to a two liters engine, so the jetting may be a little bit too big. Ask the dealer, maybe they can equip it with a proper startup jetting for a 1.6 liter engine. You should consider this from the beginning.
Don't mix the pre-facelift inlet manifolds of a two liter with a 1,6/1,8 liter. They are different. You will need the small ported one.
And don't forget to change the outlet manifold and the downpipe. There you can use all e21 m10 parts except from a 315.

I've send emails to the sellers and I am waiting to answer me.

Also new question. Is it possible to modify the stock front seats in order to have better support (kind of buckets). I've read that I could also fit e30 seats but I'm going to have a higher driving position (and I don't want that). Another choice about the seats is to find e21 Recaro but they're rare and way out of my budget. What other options do I have?
