Long time no see.

Post by primerE21 »

I know it's a long time since I have posted, but I have been busy! a 30 year old car requires alot of attention after being neglected!
So far:
Paint and body work. (shaved side markes and trim panel. Moved License plate to below bumper, drain front bumper shocks pushed in and welded)
Radiator
Hoses
New resivoir tank
Fuel transfer hose
Front pads and rotors
Caliper rebuild
Welded partial new exhaust. (made from Mini Cooper resonator!)
Home made short shifter (cut section out and welded)
New shifter bushing, pin, and clip. (Side story: I replaced this when I first bought it. The plate above sat too close for the new style ring that retains the pin. The ring rubbed off and the pin fell out, leaving me unable to drive it, bummer! I was close to home so I walked back next day, popped it into a gear from underneath and drove it home. I later found out my problem and corrected by using nuts as spacers for the plate to sit higher. For added piece of mind, while I had the plate off I bent a v in the middle with a hyrdo press. No more worries!)
Installed two new a/c lines and converted to r134
Removed air pump and egr
Routed vacuum lines so timing is always advanced...oooh more power! lol also so the idle would kick up when a/c is on. (Lines were disconnected when I bought it.)
To come; water pump, heater valve (it was stuck on... so I routed around core), Rack bushings, shocks/struts and springs.
Wish list/soon to come; front camber plates, real racing seats, lightend flywheel, electric fan...air ride?

Yeah poor Americans with the big bumpers  Wanne trade a euro bumper for an airco unit? :D

But, nice car, I like the rims. And I'm wondering the same as Wayfast; isn't it hard to read the licence plate? It's hidden a bit, low and deep under the bumper.

The bumpers do suck. I know someone who has a large stash of o.g. e21 parts, he has euro bumpers but I don't want to spend 300 bones on them. I was riding with no bumpers for a while. I figured if I was hit in the rear the car would be completely totaled along with the body work.
When I relocated the plate I also relocated lights with it. All that had to be done was lengthen wires. I will have to post some good pics. The plate is clearly visible.
The sport max rims are nice quality. They are the 15x8's I have had lots of rims over the years and they seem comparable to higher dollar counterparts. They are really light too! I stretched 195 50's on them. In the states they don't have any smaller sizes to stretch. Say what you will, I have always liked the stretched look. I put roundels on the centers for an added pop.
I would like to eventually convert the front end to (I believe it's the 315 or 318) the double lights instead of the quad lights. That is someday though.
Thanks for your support! Keep up the good work!
