Alpina A4

Post by m3gaz »

Forgive my Alpina ignorance, but i've just met a bloke who tells me he has a 1978 E21 Alpina A4 in his lock up.As is the norm he said he was "going to get round to doing it up"'.I'm gonna try and get a look at it sometime soon.Anything i should know to prove its kosha?

I'll check but think it's pretty much all 2002 A/4s stuff on an e21 bodyshell. The main thing will be the Alpina 4 butterfly throttle bodies for the injection which are red in colour. Obvious bits are steering wheel, gearknob & seats. A very rare car though.

OKM 226P was a genuine A4s/3 - A4s being the same engine as the injected ALPINA 2002 and the 3 denotes it being a 3 series. If its genuine it should also be a pre 1978 car as they switched to modifying 323i's then.

Jimmy probably knows more but I think there were about 120 earl cars converted but how many made it to the UK I have no idea. There's a book available - which you can take a look at on Sunday if you like? - by James Taylor.

Alpina a4

Post by johne21 »

Hi m3gaz,

In addition to retrobeemers comments there should also be matching chassis/engine numbers between +3780001+ and +3781950+ (rhd 320i/4
manufactured 11/75-8/77) with Alpina engine number +A4/3****+ next to cyl block number. Also four digit Alpina head number below the water inlet manifold. The Alpina engine number should correlate with the 9 page
Alpina spec sheet detailing modifications undertaken. Other considerations
are wheels, spoiler, clocks, dog-leg box, vented discs and maybe long range fuel tank in boot.

hope that helps
regards

m3gaz reminded me about Retro Car mag and showed me the e21 feature in this months.

Alpina and the influence of Chinese under-bonnet bling!
