Hey,

You are right about the kidneygrill. The black shell is different at a VFL E21 then at a NFL E21. The chrome part you can keep.

Just a quick update.

There has been a lot of stripping down going on under the bonnet. The manifold is off and getting ready for paint. The carb is just about to get a full re-build, all the parts have arrived and Friday night is 'carb night' :D

Just a quick pic of my spray work.

I will get a few clean engine bay pics soon as its put back together.

Well theres not much happening regarding getting my mighty fine 316 road legal. Time is the main problem! full time employment and a child on the way play havoc with my resto plans :x

I have however fitted a set of front brakes and given the old girl a blast around, mainly to try and clear a miss fire I have. Due to the car standing for some 12 years it has a sticky valve or atleast something not quite right with it anyway. When on the open road it runs very very smooth, far better than my daily drive 316, mind you its done a fraction of the miles. I'm hoping to get it MOT'd this coming week, its gonna be more like a hit list of problems but until then I will remain positive!

Bit of an update.

The car is now MOT'd and road worthy. I have been clocking up the miles, well about 40 miles so far. Obviously not trouble free miles :P

The car has done just over 40000miles from new but with 14 years off the road its been a roller coaster getting to where it is today. Nothing really major but the saga continues.

The car is a joy to drive and the low mileage is felt when driving this car. Its very tight and positive with NO rattles or knocks and it feels great, however since I have been driving it the gearbox has decided to leak a little, the rocker gasket is weeping and the new fan belt decided to stretch causing whinning and squeeling until it gave up altogether. The GEN light kept flickering on and off but settled down until I fitted the new fan belt and now the lights on again, also the headlights are now dimming randomly and the temp guage bounces at the same time (maybe an earth?)

I have replaced the fan belt just today and I'm awaiting a day off to spend a little time with the car and see where the gearbox is leaking. I have read numerous posts regarding these cars and what happens when there stood for long periods of time and it looks like my car is no exception.

All in all I'm very pleased with the old girl, infact I love the little thing! I'm glad I bought it and saved it from rotting away in a garage. My intention is to see this year out having ironing all the little niggles and issues, the wheels need refurb which will happen when the weather gets warmer and generally enjoy the retroness.

Everyone thats seen it so far loves it anyway 8)

Pictures will be taken very soon so you can see the old girl in all her original glory.

excellent job mate.. getting an MOT is the hard part.. im sure these little niggles can be sorted easily enough before show season starts.

BTW the brakes you fitted were the ones I sold you?

Cheers nas. Yes the brakes are doing a sterling job :) I also have new cylinders at the rear. 1970's brakes were pretty rubbish! I nearly went through my windscreen when I went out in my modern 5 door family hatch!
